What You Should Do About “NSFAS Registered” SRD Status

What Does The NSFAS 'Not Funded' Status Mean?

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a measure taken by the South African government to support the most vulnerable citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, some applicants have been denied the SRD grant and received a message stating ‘NSFAS Registered’. This indicates that the applicant is a recipient of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and is therefore ineligible for the SRD grant.

If you believe your SRD grant application has been unjustly rejected and you are not a NSFAS beneficiary, you can request a reconsideration through Sassa’s SRD website. Here’s what you need to do if you encounter the ‘NSFAS Registered’ SRD Status:

Steps to Contest the “NSFAS Registered” SRD Status

  1. Access the SRD Website: Navigate to the SRD website.
  2. Locate the ‘Application for Reconsideration’ Section: Find this section on the website.
  3. Apply for Reconsideration: Click on the link that reads ‘click here to apply for reconsideration’.
  4. Enter Your ID Number and Mobile Number: You will be asked to provide this information.
  5. Follow the Instructions: Follow the instructions to complete your reconsideration request.

NOTE: You must lodge your appeal on the Sassa website within 30 days of receiving your rejection status. You must also submit an appeal for each rejected month.

Keep in mind, if your status reads “NSFAS Registered,” you are not eligible to apply for an R350 grant. No one can receive both R350 grant payments and NSFAS simultaneously. The R350 is intended for individuals who do not have any income source or receive any grants or UIF, including NSFAS. You should check the NSFAS requirements before applying to see if you qualify for funding despite receiving other grants.
